Alamo Plaza's Old Rite Aid Is Becoming a 24-Hour Gym. Here's What's Opening Next Door to the Last One.

This summer, a reader wrote to Bay Area Telegraph with a question half of Alamo had been asking from the Safeway parking lot. What was going into the old Rite Aid? She had heard it would be a Fitness 19, and then she had heard it would be something else. Both versions turned out to be partly right. The 17,640-square-foot building at 130 Alamo Plaza has been leased to Vim + Vigor Fitness for the company's first "Reserve Club." The club is scheduled to open in December, and a temporary pre-enrollment office was set to open on Monday, November 2.

For years that end of Alamo Plaza had a drugstore and a 24 Hour Fitness club side by side. When the Reserve Club opens, the drugstore building becomes the gym. The old gym storefront next door is still waiting for a permanent tenant, and the prescription counter that used to be there is now across the street.

The Fitness 19 Rumor Had a Basis

The signs will read Vim + Vigor Fitness Reserve, not Fitness 19. The two names are related, though. ENDO Fitness runs clubs under both brands. Bay Area Telegraph reported that several Bay Area Fitness 19 clubs, including ones in Concord, Pleasanton, Campbell and San Jose, have already been converted to Vim + Vigor, and that the operator is now putting its growth into the Vim + Vigor name.

Alamo isn't getting a converted club, though. It's getting the first of a new format. Vim + Vigor's own Alamo location page calls the Reserve Club "our most elevated fitness experience, designed for those who expect more from where they train." When the company opens a brand-new concept in this particular building, Alamo is the place it gets judged first.

What 17,640 Square Feet of Former Drugstore Becomes

Renovation crews were already working inside the building in early September, when DanvilleSanRamon.com stopped by. The company did not respond to the outlet's request for an interview. Most of what's public about the inside comes from the company's own description. Here is what the Reserve Club advertises:

  • Strength and cardio equipment from Panatta Sport, Arsenal Strength, Torque Fitness, Life Fitness, Matrix, Hammer Strength and American Barbell
  • Recovery amenities, including a Himalayan salt sauna, red-light therapy, compression boots and massage chairs
  • Personal training
  • 24-hour member access, which Bay Area Telegraph noted would make it unusual among nearby gyms, most of which keep shorter hours

Pricing has already moved. In late August, Bay Area Telegraph reported a founding rate of $65 a month for the first 400 members, with the regular rate eventually rising to $109. The club's Alamo page now shows the $65 rate crossed out and an $85 founding rate offered to "the next 300 members only." After that second round fills, the page says, the standard $109 a month applies. So the first round has been claimed and the second is open. These are the company's published rates, and they could change again before December.

Where the Pharmacy Went

The drugstore errand left this corner more than a year ago. Rite Aid's pharmacy in Alamo stopped filling prescriptions on July 28, 2025, and customers' prescriptions moved to the CVS Pharmacy across the street at 3158 Danville Blvd., according to DanvilleSanRamon.com. The store closed for good in August 2025, during Rite Aid's nationwide bankruptcy proceedings. At that point it was one of the last two Rite Aid stores in the Tri-Valley. The other was in Pleasanton. In the last weeks, the shelves and fixtures themselves were for sale, and staff taped a handmade sign to the checkout counter: "Rite Aid Alamo would like to thank all of our customers for the support over the years! Thank you! We will miss you!"

That move is what makes the new lease make sense. A second drugstore would have opened across Danville Boulevard from a CVS that already has Alamo's transferred prescriptions. A gym brings in a different crowd at different hours. If the club really offers 24-hour access, it brings people to the plaza long after the post office and most of the storefronts have closed for the night.

The closure also left Safeway as Alamo Plaza's only traditional anchor, DanvilleSanRamon.com noted at the time. The plaza does more than retail, though. It holds the post office, the Alamo Women's Club, where many public meetings take place, and the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office Valley Station, according to a DanvilleSanRamon.com downtown series from October 2025. EDENS has owned the center since a deal dated March 28, 2022. EDENS describes the property as more than 200,000 square feet anchored by Safeway and lists community murals among its improvements since buying it.

A Gym Moves In Next to the Last One

The storefront right next to the Rite Aid housed Alamo Express by 24 Hour Fitness until the club closed early in the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. It has had no long-term tenant since. In August 2025, Adopt-A-Family Bikes was using it as a seasonal location. Part of the confusion over what was coming came from these two spaces. Vim + Vigor is taking the former Rite Aid building itself, not the old gym space next door.

Once it opens, the Reserve Club will join two fitness tenants already in the plaza:

Address Tenant Status
130 Alamo Plaza Vim + Vigor Fitness Reserve Club Opening scheduled for December 2026
170F Alamo Plaza BODYROK Open, pilates studio
190F Alamo Plaza The Iron House Open
Storefront next door to 130 Former Alamo Express by 24 Hour Fitness Closed in 2020, used seasonally since

As Bay Area Telegraph reported, the lease puts a very large former drugstore back into use roughly a year and a half after Rite Aid left, and it brings a major fitness business back to a part of the center that once had a longtime gym next door. In 2020, the gym closed and the drugstore stayed. Now the drugstore building is the gym, and the plaza will have three fitness businesses in one center.

Between Now and the December Opening

The opening date is a target. Vim + Vigor has said December 2026 on its own page and in local coverage, and the outside of the building should show more activity as the month gets closer. For anyone keeping an eye on it during regular trips to the plaza, here's how the next several weeks are scheduled to go:

  1. Now. The temporary pre-enrollment office was scheduled to open November 2. The Alamo page lists no regular gym hours yet, only that date.
  2. Through the founding round. The $85 founding rate applies until 300 more members sign up. After that, the company says the price goes to $109 a month.
  3. December. This is the scheduled opening for the Reserve Club at 130 Alamo Plaza.

Sunday mornings will give the clearest view of how the corner is changing. The Alamo Farmers' Market sets up year-round in the Bank of America parking lot at 120 Alamo Plaza, Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., just a few doors from the building that used to sell everything down to its shelves.

When a building that used to be an anchor reopens as something else, the change usually shows up in what nearby homeowners notice and what buyers ask about.
